Bringing Tobacco Into Canada
If youre a Canadian traveling abroad and discover a new kind of pipe tobacco you know your grandfather would like, can you bring it home with you and get it through customs?à There are some specific rules about how much and who can bring tobacco into Canada. Its wise to be familiar with these rules before you get to the customs line; otherwise, your wish of bringing tobacco products home with you could go up in smoke. Returning Canadians, visitors to Canada, and people moving to settle in Canada are allowed to bring a limited amount of tobacco into Canada with certain restrictions. You must be over the age of 18 for any of these rules to apply, however, and you can only bring tobacco products for your own personal use. A special duty applies to cigarettes, tobacco sticks or loose tobacco unless they are marked with an excise tax stamp reading DUTY PAID CANADA DROIT ACQUITTÃâ° (droiteà acquittà © is French for duty paid).à Canadian-made products sold at duty-free shops are marked this way. Here are the specific limits and kinds of tobacco products that a Canadian can bring through customs under his or her personal exemption (the personal exemption allows Canadians to bring goods of a certain value into the country duty- and tax-free). 200 cigarettes50 cigars200 grams (7 ounces) of manufactured tobacco200 tobacco sticks These limits apply to tobacco products as long as they accompany the person bringing them into Canada (in other words, you cant ship or import the tobacco separately like you can with some other goods). If you bring in more than allowed under your personal exemption, youll pay any applicable duty on the excess amount. How to Report Tobacco Products at Customs The amount you claim for your personal exemption must be reported inà Canadian dollars. If you arent sure of their value, you can use a foreign currency exchange converter, and enter the amount you paid for the items (keep those receipts) and the currency used.à And an important note for Canadian citizens and temporary residents: the length of time youve been out of the country determines what youre allowed to claim as your personal exemption. If its been less than 48 hours, your tobacco products will be subject to the usual duties and taxes. Try to have any tobacco products readily available when you arrive at the country border. Digging through your luggage to find those cigars or cigarettes will only make the process take longer. Try not to forget the emergency pack of cigarettes you have stashed in your pocket; you have to declare all tobacco products, even open packages.à Taking Tobacco to Other Countries Canadians traveling to other countries should become familiar with the rules about bringing Canadian tobacco products with them before they depart. The rules can vary considerably from one country to the next (even for Canadas neighbors to the south).

The Things They Carried By Tim O Brien - 1377 Words
Tyler Nooney Trafford P.6 The Things They Carried Essay The central theme and true meaning of courage is shown vividly in numerous instances throughout Tim Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s classic novel The Things They Carried. Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s novel begins with the courage of coming of age, along with the authorââ¬â¢s loss of his innocence. Tim, the protagonist of this novel, goes through an incredible change in belief when he must choose to either run away from the Vietnam War or unwillingly join the bloody battle, of which he strongly did not have faith in. The main courageous occurrence that Oââ¬â¢Brien was showing the reader was the fear of going to war, and the integrity behind holding ones beliefs and morals in fighting for their country. The Things They Carried showsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Oââ¬â¢Brien uses explicit details and imagery to illustrate what the experience was like for the terrified men. Although they are sad for the loss of their friend Lavender, and try as hard as they can to be courageous, their major feeling is of relief, mainly because they are still living. Courage is shown in the ââ¬Å"The Things They Carriedâ⬠with this quote. ââ¬Å"They carried the soldierââ¬â¢s greatest fear, which was the fear of blushing. Men killed, and died, because they were embarrassed not to. It was what had brought them to the war in the first place, nothing positive, no dreams of glory or honor, just to avoid the blush of dishonor. They died so as not to die of embarrassment.â⬠(p. --) This quotation is Oââ¬â¢Brien expressing his reasons for having the courage in going to Vietnam, instead of being a coward. At the same time he is giving the reader a generalization that foreshadows the later several references towards courage and cowardice. ââ¬Å"On the Rainy Riverâ⬠is a story recalled by Oââ¬â¢Brien that he states has never told to anyone. ââ¬Å"To go into it, Iââ¬â¢ve always thought, would only cause embarrassment for all of us â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (p. 39) By coming out and telling his readers this confession only shows his courage from it in the long run. The story develops the theme of embarrassment as a motivating factor, just as Jimmy Cross feels guilty about Ted Lavenderââ¬â¢s death, Oââ¬â¢Brien feels guilty about going to

Team Essay Example For Students
Team Essay 1. Lack of alignment with company vision and mission. Leadership must understand that if employees do not understand how theypersonally fit into the vision, this statement is not worth the paper on which it wasprinted. 2. Team charter is unclear. A charter is a document prepared by leadership that answers:* What is the reason this team exists?* What are the steps to be followed by this team?* What quantitative results are expected for this team to be successful?* Who are the team members, team leaders and team liaison?* Who will support the team if needed?* How much time should be spent in meetings and outside of meetings?* What authority does the team have? What things cannot be changed?* What items are outside the scope of the team?* What budget does the team have?* What are the outputs from the team? When are they expected to becomplete? To whom should they be given?3. A cookbook approach was used instead of a custom-tailored approach. Although my company has advocated a specific process in implementing teams, the simple truth is that the process has never been followed. The process is anexcellent baseline, but each organization has a unique culture; a unique history;a unique group of leaders, managers and people and a unique team-basedbackground that must be taken into consideration when designing and refining aspecific organizations team-based process. 4. Middle management/supervisors roles are not changed. Middle managers and supervisors typically have all the responsibility forperformance, but little authority to achieve performance. When asked todescribe their fob, middle managers and supervisors use words like fire fighter, policeman, power broker, paper pusher, stock chaser, baby sitter, disciplinarian, problem fixer and priority settler. In the future, there will be fewer middle managers and no supervisors. This doesnot mean these people will be fired. On the contrary, these are some of the bestpeople in our companies and they will be moved into much more satisfying, relevant, value-added work in which their talents may be more fully utilized.
